Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have realized by now that battle royale games are here to stay. It seems like all big game developers have put out or are working on putting out their own version. So how do you feel about them?

I honestly wasn’t a big fan of the genre at the beginning. The first title to launch that hit mainstream was DayZ, which had zombies in it. Zombies aren’t my thing so I never tried it and only casually watched it when I was bored.

PUBG launched, and I was a little more impressed. It was basically a DayZ reskin, but with no zombies. SCORE, or so I thought. I played it a little bit, but it felt really clunky when I tried it and gave up shortly thereafter. From what I’ve seen recently, it’s gotten better and they’ve added more things to keep people interested, but I have yet to revisit it.

Fortnite came out shortly after that and just exploded within the community. It’s been the top viewed game on Twitch for a long time and doesn’t seem to be slowing. I wanted to like this game, but I suck at the building aspect and I always managed to get aggravated when someone built the Empire State Building to evade me.

Since Fortnite came out, a host of other studios have launched their own attempts at Battle Royale. HiRez made one, Call of Duty has one (which I thoroughly enjoy), and now even Respawn has made a Titanfall inspired battle royale (no titans, but more on this game in a later post).

Needless to say, whether you love them or hate them, studios will continue to pump out battle royale games, because they’re popular. While most of them are similar to others with slight variations, the minute a new game drops in the genre, people are trying it out.

So what are your feelings on this genre? Do you love it or hate it, or are you somewhere in between? Let me know in the comments below and thank you as always for reading.
